We are pleased to announce the Spring Church in Metropolitan Areas Conference entitled “The Global City and the Environment: A Faith Based Perspective”. The conference will be held Monday, April 20th through Thursday, April 23rd in New Jersey.
The Global City and the Environment: A Faith Based Perspective will explore the results of our built environment and the impact our cities have on building, sustaining and recycling our environment. The Meadowlands in northern New Jersey sits just minutes from the Empire State building and midtown Manhattan. Formerly an industrial waste site for the old industrial cities of New York, Newark, and Jersey City it is now becoming a new edge city offering eco-tourism as one of its entertainment attractions along with Xanadu and Giants Stadium. We will be hosted by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission www.njmeadowlands.gov.
Our program will feature a day long session with the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission at their center in the Meadowlands. We will also have sessions with GreenFaith, Interfaith Partners in Action for the Earth, www.GreenFaith.org. and with Metro IAF and particularly the New Jersey IAF group that has fought the chromium battle in against Honeywell and most recently with PPG in Jersey City, www.industrialareasfoundation.org.
Our biblical and theological reflection for the conference will be led by Judith Jones and Edmundo Desueza, CMA’s resident leaders for this reflection. The theme of their studies will be “What we have seen, what is, and what is to come” using the first three chapters of the Book of Revelation.
We will be meeting in a variety of sites to give participants a chance to experience first hand the environmental issues. We will be staying at the Marriott Fairfield Inn 850 Paterson Plank R. East Rutherford, NJ 201-507-5222. Each person needs to make their own lodging arrangements. The cost of the conference is $150 per person. Further readings materials and details of the conference will be passed on with registration.

The Church in Metropolitan Areas is a self chosen group of persons who seek to share with one another best practices and peer-learnings as we work in metropolitan ministry settings. The group came into existence at the 2000 General Convention of the Episcopal Church. We welcome all like-minded persons of faith who seek to build vital congregations in our metropolitan areas.
Please register by April 6th so we can plan appropriately.
